THE NASSAU COUNTY AUXILIARY POLICE PROGRAM

The Nassau County Auxiliary Police was established in 1951 under the State Defense Emergency Act, to help the regular police in an event of civil defense emergency.

The Nassau County Police Department’s Academy staff trains auxiliary police officers.  Training covers peace officer powers, New York State penal law, hazardous materials awareness, baton training, blood-borne pathogens, basic first aid/CPR, traffic and pedestrian control, handicapped parking enforcement, response to critical incidents and many aspects of community service.

The Nassau County Auxiliary Police consists of 41 separate units throughout the 8 precincts in the Nassau County Police Department. These units are under the direct command of the Nassau County Police Department’s Community Safety Unit.

Although centrally controlled - the individual units work together with their precinct to coordinate their patrols and any functions that may arise such as parades and festivals.

On a day-to-day basis, we patrol our neighborhoods, parks, schools, houses of worship and local businesses.  Our presence in uniform and marked police vehicles deters possible criminal activities.  We assist the police at scenes of auto accidents, fires, and other emergencies.
